Los Angeles, The J. Paul Getty Museum

The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold

The small-format codex is one of the most exquisite Burgundian illuminated manuscripts and is on display in its original in Bern. The Prayer Book was commissioned by Charles the Bold for his personal use and produced by the finest book illuminators of Flanders. Embellished with gold throughout, the book also testifies to the legendary love for luxury at the Burgundian court.

Thanks to the Faksimile-Verlag Luzern, the illuminated manuscript with its 47 wonderful miniatures and lavish border decorations will also be in view in three facsimile editions in the exhibition in Bern. The facsimile edition has a purple silk binding, a faithful reproduction of the surviving original binding.

The Fine Art Facsimile Edition
The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold is small (124 x 92 mm) but unfolds in 318 pages all the splendour of Burgundian bibliophily. It is available from the Faksimile Verlag Luzern in a worldwide strictly limited edition of 980 hand-numbered copies. Further info
