The Exhibition Catalogue

The Duchy of Burgundy was one of Europe’s most powerful and wealthiest dynasties in the late Middle Ages. Burgundian court culture was one of the high points in the history of European art. The catalogue, published jointly by the Historisches Museum Bern and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, unfolds the cultural, social and political panorama of this epoch and documents the present state of research.

Essays present the personality of Charles the Bold, discuss the highly representative significance of works of art and describe the role they played in diplomatic ceremonial. The works of painting and book illumination, the art of textiles and goldsmith’s work presented in this catalogue show the richness and exquisite quality of the creations that were made by Europe’s leading artists in the service of or following the model of the Burgundian court. Thanks to the latest technologies, spectacular images of details of textiles and goldsmith’s enable us to see and appreciate the astonishing virtuosity of Burgundian court culture in a new dimension.
