Schloss Oberhofen

Further Exhibitions on the theme

Schloss Oberhofen

Schloss Oberhofen is magnificently situated in one of the most beautiful parks in the Alpine region, on the shores of Lake Thun. The museum building rises picturesquely overlooking the lake, and beyond it, the imposing panorama of the Bernese Alps. The ancient castle now houses an important exhibition of Bernese domestic interiors and period furniture.

During the Peasant Wars in the 15th century Schloss Oberhofen was the seat of the commander of the Bernese forces, Niklaus von Scharnachthal, who led the Swiss Confederates to victory over Charles the Bold at the battle of Murten. In thanksgiving he commissioned the frescoes in the castle chapel with the martyrdom of the ten thousand knights. In this original setting you can experience how a Bernese nobleman lived during the waning of the Middle Ages.

Schloss Spiez

Schloss Spiez is one of the most impressive testimonials of Bernese history on Lake Thun. The existing castle shows how a medieval castle was transformed into a sumptuous patrician residence.

25 May to 28 September 2008

Special Exhibition Adrian von Bubenberg (1434–1479) – Statesman and Army Commander

This small but lavish exhibition in Schloss Spiez is dedicated to the life of the castle’s former owner, Adrian von Bubenberg (1434–1479). He has gone down in history as a knight and general thanks to his heroic defence of the town of Murten in the war against Duke Charles the Bold in 1476. Numerous objects and memorabilia, including the only two surviving documents written in his hand, illustrate his life and times. The collected portraits of the Bubenberg family from the Schilling Chronicle will also be displayed in large format for the first time.

Schloss Grandson

Schloss Grandson

A permanent exhibition in Schloss Grandson on Lake Neuenburg commemorates the major battle fought between Charles the Bold’s Burgundian army and the Swiss Confederates. On loan from Schloss Grandson, a reproduction of Charles’s ducal hat is to be seen in the exhibition on Charles the Bold in Bern; the hat was part of the legendary booty that the Swiss Confederate forces took at the battle of Grandson in 1476.
