The earliest of the approximately 65,000 objects date from the 6th century BC and the latest represent the present. The collections were started by the City Library and came to the museum in 1898. They include the most important collection worldwide of Bernese coins and medals as well as coin and medal dies. It is also one of the most important collections of Swiss and ancient coins (Greek and Roman) in Switzerland. Moreover it comprises an internationally renowned and nationally unique assemblage of oriental coins.
