Numismatic collection

The earliest of the approximately 80,000 objects date from the 6th century BC and the latest represent the present. The collections were started by the City Library and came to us in 1898. They include the most important collection worldwide of Bernese coins and medals as well as coin and medal dies. It is also one of the most important collections of Swiss and ancient coins (Greek and Roman) in Switzerland. Moreover it comprises an internationally renowned and nationally unique assemblage of oriental coins. The coin and medal storage facility covers an area of 16 m². The individual pieces are neatly stored in a total of 2000 drawers. To ensure order in the collections, each object is placed in a separate compartment.

The drawers of the numismatic collection cover the whole of history from Ancient Greece to the European Monetary Union. The coin collection is an important source for researchers in Switzerland and abroad.
